Why Your Body Reaches for Sugar When Life Gets Hard: A Weight Loss Program for Women Built on Safety
If you’re a woman over 40 and the weight won’t budge, you’ve probably tried everything. Every diet, every plan, every “just push harder” tip.
Here’s what I want you to know: it’s not a willpower problem.
I’m Dr. Cody Golman, a chiropractor and women’s weight loss coach. I’ve coached over 1,000 clients through a hormone reset, and most of them looked a lot like you: driven, busy, and worn out from trying every diet out there.
In this post, I’ll show you why your body reaches for sugar when life gets hard, and what we do to help your brain and body feel safe again. At the end, you’ll get a short version of my energy session to try tonight.
What Is the FAST40 Hormone Reset Weight Loss Program?
FAST40 is a seven-step weight loss program for women that I built to help you reset your hormones, get your energy back, and lose weight in a way that feels safe to your body.
The steps are taken in order, one at a time. Step one is turning on your fat furnace.
What Is Your “Fat Furnace”?
Your fat furnace is your body’s ability to burn its own fat for fuel. In my experience, a body that burns fat has steadier energy and fewer cravings.
Are You a Sugar Burner?
You might be if you:
- Get hungry a few hours after you eat
- Feel tired or irritable
- Carry weight around your middle
If that sounds like you, this is where we start.
Why Stress Makes You Crave Sugar
Here’s what happens inside your body on a hard day:
- A tense email lands. The kids are fighting. Your to-do list never ends.
- Your brain’s alarm goes off.
- Your body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
- Those hormones get you moving fast, and moving fast takes fast fuel.
- Sugar is the fastest fuel your body knows, so your body asks for it.
You grab the cookie and feel a little relief. Your brain files it away: stress, sugar, relief.
How a Craving Becomes a Habit Highway
Scientists have a saying for this: brain cells that fire together wire together. A path you walk over and over becomes a highway.
After a while, you don’t decide to reach for sugar. Your body does it for you.
Think of stress as a kind of pain and sugar as a quick pleasure. Your brain moves toward pleasure and away from pain.
Why Willpower Isn’t Enough
That highway took years to build, so willpower has a hard time beating it. You don’t need to fight the old road. You need to build a new one.
How Joe Dispenza’s Teaching Shaped My Weight Loss Coaching for Women
The teacher who shaped how I coach is a chiropractor too: Dr. Joe Dispenza.
Joe Dispenza is a chiropractor, teacher, and author who has spent years studying how our habits of thought and feeling shape the mind and body. His teaching on how the mind gets wired by habit became the heart of step one in my program.
The Core Idea
His teaching says our bodies get used to the chemistry of the same emotions day after day, and that practice can change it. I use this idea with my clients every week.
What’s Research and What’s Experience
I like to be clear about what is what:
- Supported by research: stress hormones, habit loops in the brain, and the calming effect of breathing and meditation.
- From teaching and experience: Joe Dispenza’s ideas about brain wave states, and what I see with my clients when their bodies move from burning sugar to burning fat.
The 3 Pieces of Step One in Our Weight Loss Program for Women
When women ask me what makes a great weight loss program for women over 40, I point to three things working together.
1. Feed Your Body Enough to Feel Safe
This surprises almost every woman I meet: your body needs to be fed.
Most women I coach have been undereating for years. They cut calories, skip meals, and push through the day on coffee. Your body watches all of that and reads it as a famine. In my experience, a body that has been underfed has a very hard time leaving survival mode.
Inside my program, I guide clients through a carefully structured eating phase, with me walking through every meal. This is something I do one on one. Please don’t try it on your own, and don’t change how much you eat based on a blog post.
2. Support Your Body’s Switch From Sugar to Fat
Each woman in the program gets a supplement plan built to support that switch. I keep the details inside the program, because the plan fits the woman.
3. Teach Your Brain to Feel Safe Too
This is the biggest piece, and the one I learned from Dr. Dispenza.
You can eat enough and follow the best plan in the world. If your brain still lives in survival, your body keeps reaching for sugar.
His teaching says we get used to our stress. The body gets comfortable with the chemistry of worry, rush, and pressure, and keeps asking for more of it. Many women run from that feeling with food, with work, or with being busy every minute.
Here is how I teach it: your body is wiser than you think. When you slow down and feel what is there, your body learns that the feeling can be survived, and it lets go of the alarm.
Safety comes first, and fuel follows.
Try This 2-Minute Energy Session Tonight
This is a short version of my 7-minute energy moving session. Moving your body gets you out of your head and into your body. From there, you feel what is there and stay with it, one breath at a time.
If you need a chair, take a chair. Stop anytime.
- Stand with your feet about hip width apart.
- Place one hand on your belly.
- Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, three slow breaths.
- Move. Shake out your hands, then your arms, then your shoulders. Let your hips sway.
- Slow down and come to stillness.
- Notice what you feel: warmth, tightness, tingling, or heaviness.
- Place a hand on the spot where you feel it most, and give it one word in your mind.
- Stay with it for three slow breaths. Your only job is to notice.
- Stretch your arms up, bring them down slowly, and shake out your hands.
If it ever feels like too much, open your eyes, feel your feet on the floor, and take one slow breath.
The full 7-minute session goes deeper and lives inside the FAST40 program.
Three Questions to Map Your Own Pattern
Take a minute and write down your answers:
- When life gets hard, what do you reach for first?
- Where do you feel stress in your body?
- What would feeling safe in your body look like for you?
Those answers are your map.
Key Takeaways
- Stress sends your body toward sugar, and your brain learns the path.
- Willpower struggles against habits that took years to build.
- Step one turns on your fat furnace by feeding your body enough to feel safe, supporting your switch from sugar to fat, and teaching your brain to stay present with what you feel.
- When safety comes first, fuel follows.
